"Unity in Diversity"

The Mystic Woman's Club seeks women in the Southeastern Connecticut area who want to share the satisfaction of working to improve our community.  Our organization is made up of women just like you...all ages, all walks of life...who want to make a difference.  Beautification, education, social services, literature, the arts...all these areas are available for your contributions.  And as individuals who enjoy each other's company, we also have fun together.  Join us!

Who We Are

The Mystic Woman's Club (MWC) was established in 1967 as part of the General Federation of Women's Club (GFWC) and the General Federation of Women's Club in Connecticut (GFWC/CT), with these purposes:

        - To promote all aspects of education, with the goal of a more literate society;
        - To take an active role in leadership for the preservation of our country's resources;
        - To sponsor study and participation in the arts and to encourage young talent;
        - To stress the importance of good citizenship, spiritual values, and good health for all peoples;
        - To keep members informed on current issues involving legislation and international relations;
        - To strengthen the home, and through it, to make realistic contributions toward world peace.

These are ambitious goals that reflect the nature and intent of GFWC and GFWC International.  Mystic Woman's Club's intent is to apply these goals to our community; to do what we can to provide assistance to those around us.  We are non-denominational and inclusive in our membership.

About Our Meetings

We meet monthly, the second Thursday of each month, at St. Mark's Church in Mystic, from September to May.  All meetings begin at 7:00 pm except for January and February, when we meet at noon.  Each meeting features a program, typically a presentation by one of the many organizations that try to fill the many needs in the community.  These programs have included speakers from such diverse organizations as the Alzheimer's Association; the Groton Animal Foundation; the Stanton-Davis Homestead Museum; and Fiddleheads Food Cooperative.  The public is welcome to attend any meeting.

One very special meeting each year is our Birthday Dinner, which honors the founding of our club back in 1968.  The 2010 dinner happened at the Mystic Hilton, and honored guests included the GFWC/CT (state) president and the Chairman of GFWC's New England Region.

About Our Thrift Shop

MWC operates a Thrift Shop in Pawcatuck, in the strip mall on Route 1, next to the Stonington Police Department.  The shop is open Monday through Saturday, 12 noon to 3:30 pm.  The Thrift Shop stocks adult clothing, house wares, decorative items, gift items, books, magazines, record albums, linens and bedding, and seasonal items such as Christmas decorations.  There is always a selection of items such as dishes, lamps, vases, glassware, jewelry, shoes, neckties, belts, and greeting cards.  Several racks are filled with both men's and ladies' blouses, blazers, slacks and skirts.

Net proceeds from the shop are distributed annually in grants to organizations in the community and in scholarships to graduating woman seniors at three local high schools.

          Club members provide the staffing as well as management.  Donations from the public are welcome; we accept clean clothing and household items in good to excellent condition.  Please drop off your donations during shop hours.  We cannot accept furniture, as we are limited in space.  A tax letter will be provided on request.

In 2008, we distributed more than $11,000 this way.  Here's a list of those donations

About Our Other Fundraising Activities

Our Spring 2010 Fundraiser, a Military Whist, resulted in proceeds of $665 to benefit the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut, Inc. (New London Women's Shelter).  Our Fall 2009 Fundraiser, a poinsettia sale, netted $1950 that was split between Groton's and Stonington's Human Services Departments' Winter Heating Relief Funds.  The club conducts a Spring and a Fall Fundraiser every year.

Most years the club holds a fundraiser specifically to benefit the Phelps Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to a daughter or granddaughter of a club members (chosen by lottery).  The Fall 2010 tag sale held for this purpose netted about $850.  Other sources of income for this fund include member donations and memorial donations from the club treasury to honor members who have passed on.

About Our Club-Related Activities

- Lunch Bunch
            The club's Lunch Bunch Committee plans occasional outings that involve a visit to some place of interest (for example, a museum, an exhibit, or one of the many agencies that we donate to) plus lunch at a local restaurant.  The Lunch Bunch itself is somewhat amorphous; members participate at their personal convenience.

- Adopt-a-Road
            Throughout the year, primarily spring and fall, members of the club walk a route assigned by the Town of Groton to collect trash that has collected by the roadside.  The route is about one mile long and typically 5-8 members participate.  Here's a recent road crew event ->...

- Library Reading Program
            During the spring and fall semesters, club members meet regularly at Mystic-Noank Library with students from a local kindergarten to read stories.

- Bridge Group
            Some club members have formed a bridge group that meets monthly to provide playing time and instruction as appropriate.

- Book Group
            Several members have formed a book group that meets monthly.  Members of this group all read a book chosen by the group. Group meetings give them an opportunity to discuss the various books and the ideas within.
